I've had exactly the opposite experience, I've been using JJ's for ten years in several different amps and have never had a problem. On the other hand you couldn't give me Mesa power tubes, they're junk. I even had a certified Mesa/Boogie repair shop owner tell me he had a 50% return rate on Mesa tubes. |
And his name is? |
So... you work for Mesa. |

Well, I'm kinda on the Fisher-Price level of expertise, but I wanted to experiment a little with tube in my X100b.
I went to a website called Tube Depot and emailed them and asked for advice. They recommended a bunch of different tubes. I bought 4 matched 6L6's for about $80 I think.
I just went with the guy's rec. Read my comments on the other thread about Drew's revelation on tubes....I'm not sure I could hear the nuanced differences between different tube brands.
But also...I think probably there is some degree of variation from tube to tube within the same manufacturer and model, so even if someone says to buy Sovteks or whatever, you might buy the same brand and get a different result.
My advice---don't go dirt cheap, but don't buy anything on the high end, either, and buy several different types, and just try them out. Your opinion is what matters. |

Lots of the current production tubes are just fine (actually some are really quite good). I think way too much is made of NOS, etc. Do your research....and of course in the end.....you gotta use your ears |

I just wanted to know of some that may save me some time and money doing the tube switcheroo over and over. I would like to replace the stocks. Looks like I need to buy several and plug and play. Do I need to bias each set as I try them? |

I've had great results and tone with Svetlana EL34's and JJ pre's in my MTS.....Ordered them from Doug's tubes, and he tests and labels the a,b numbers for each one....never have gotten even one dud, ever ! (if a tube were bad , his testing would catch it before shipping)
Only bias when you put in your matched quad of output tubes, not necessary if you are moving pre's around for variance.
Everybody will have opinions about specific brands.....you can make an edjucated choice before you decide (by researching first), and should not have to spend too much. |
